Rhododendron flammeum - Oconee Azalea - Fulton County, GA Ecotype - Seedling

Rhododendron flammeum is known as the Oconee azalea or the Piedmont flame azalea. This species prefers to grow as an understory tree in shady or partially sunny spots, preferably with sheltered afternoon sun. This species is prevalent in shady moist spots around the Chattahoochee River. Rhododendron flammeum can reach around 20 feet tall and makes for a wonderful landscape plant!

Flowers on Rhododendron flammeum open early in the growing season. Flower color will range from orange to deep red however other colors do exist!

Young trees must be protected from deer browse. Seedling will need mist acclimation. First year seedlings are small and grow slowly for the first three years.  Random selection.  

Cultivation Guidelines:
Light: Shade for most of the day.
Restricted Range: Prefers moist, rich soils. Amend planting area. 
Growing Medium: Native soils.
