Rhododendron canescens is known as the Piedmont azalea. This species prefers to grow as an understory tree in shady or partially sunny spots, preferably with sheltered afternoon sun. This species is prevalent in shady moist spots around the Chattahoochee River. Rhododendron canescens can reach around 15 feet tall and makes for a wonderful landscape plant!
Flowers on Rhododendron canescens open early in the growing season. Flower color will range from white to deep pinks however other colors do exist! Flowers possess an immense and sweet fragrance!
Young trees must be protected from deer browse. Seedling will need mist acclimation. Seedlings are small and grow slowly for the first three years. Random selection.
Cultivation Guidelines:
Light: Shade for most of the day.
Restricted Range: Prefers moist, rich soils. Amend planting area.
Growing Medium: Native soils.
