Rhododendron calendulaceum is known as the Flame azalea. This species prefers to grow as an understory tree in shady or partially sunny spots, preferably with sheltered afternoon sun. This species is prevalent in shady moist spots around the Appalachian Mountains. Rhododendron calendulaceum can reach around 15 feet tall and makes for a wonderful landscape plant! Seeds are from a low elevation form plant.

Flowers on Rhododendron calendulaceum open early in the growing season, but plants at higher elevations bloom at later times. Flower color will range from yellow/orange to deep red however other colors do exist!

Young trees must be protected from deer browse. Seedling will need mist acclimation. First year seedlings are small and grow slowly for the first three years.  Random selection.
