Prunus serotina is commonly known as black cherry. This species prefers to grow as a canopy tree in full sun to part shade. Black cherry reaches heights of up to 100 feet tall and can live for hundreds of years! Prunus serotina is a climax species meaning it can persist in nearly undisturbed old growth here around Southern Appalachia!

This tree species is important for wildlife and timber. Trees produce many berries that birds prefer! This plant supports hundreds of species of insects!

Young trees must be protected from deer browse. Trees are approximately 1-2 feet tall. Random selection.  

Cultivation Guidelines:
Light: Sun for most of the day.
Restricted Range: Prefers moist, rich soils. 
Growing Medium: Native soils.
