Liquidambar styracuiflua is commonly known as sweet gum. This species prefers to grow as a canopy tree in full sun to part shade. It can reach a height of up to around 100 feet tall and can live for hundreds of years! Liquidambar styracuiflua is a mid-successional species meaning it can persist in sites that were once disturbed.
This tree species is important for wildlife and timber. Trees are called sweet gum due to the sweet resin that is produced when damaging the bark and cambium. Early pioneers and native people would chew this resin. This plant supports hundreds of species ranging from birds, to rodents and insects!
While relatively deer resistant, young trees must be protected from deer browse. Trees are approximately 1-2 feet tall. Random selection.
Cultivation Guidelines:
Light: Sun for most of the day.
