Juglans nigra is commonly known as black walnut. This species prefers to grow as a canopy tree in full sun to part shade. Walnut can reach a height of up to around 150 feet tall and can live for hundreds of years! Juglans nigra is a climax species meaning it can persist in nearly undisturbed old growth here around Southern Appalachia!
This tree species is important for wildlife and timber. Trees produce tasty walnuts! This plant supports hundreds of species ranging from birds, to rodents and insects!
Young trees must be protected from deer browse. Trees are approximately 1-2 feet tall. Random selection.
Cultivation Guidelines:
Light: Sun for most of the day.
Restricted Range: Prefers moist, rich soils.
Growing Medium: Native soils.
