Specialized Plant Nursery - Located in beautiful Western North Carolina along a small drainage of the Hiwassee River

Dancing Star Horticulture operates in Western North Carolina at over 600 meters elevation ASL. We utilize the southern aspect on the mountain for maximum solar exposure and reduced effects of cold during winter. We select for specific traits when propagating plant material such as higher production, better seed set, and overall insect and disease resistance. All plant material is produced organically.

Obsession with Mountains and Native Flora

Mountains produce geographic isolation, climate variation, and increased diversity of habitats which ultimately produces a greater diversity of species on the land. Greater diversity of species means improved quality of life, natural climate regulation, and improved ability for ecosystems and landscapes to rebound following disturbance.

Our Mountains Need Help!

The insects are vanishing! In the last 200-300 years we have decimated native ecosystems. The old growth forests were almost completely logged - some forests never returned. Almost every wetland has been ditched, drained, or altered. We replace native pastures, wildflower meadows, and prairies with "developments" and lawns. We pave over arable soil with rock and chemicals. Is this sustainable? We must restore our landscape for present and future generations.

Luckily native plants from our region are increasing in popularity with landscapers, gardeners, and land managers alike! The climate in the Southern Appalachian Mountains selects for plants that can adapt to a wide range of temperatures and conditions. When landscaping, ideally a large portion of the plants should be native. You will be rewarded with a space that can establish itself easily and will host many insects and other native animals.
